Abel Selaocoe's Solo Debut BBC Proms With BBC Now at Royal Albert Hall

With ‘knock-out charm’ to match his virtuoso skill, South African cellist Abel Selaocoe is redefining the instrument and having a blast doing it. Blending traditional playing styles with improvisation, singing and body percussion, his energised performances bring together classical and world music in a unique fusion. He is joined by Simo Lagnawi on guembri (three-stringed Moroccan lute) and by other members of his own trio, Chesaba, as well as the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for a concert covering typically broad musical ground.

Surround Sound with Soloist Abel Selaocoe and members of Britten Sinfonia at Ely Cathedral

Surround Sound will bring a playlist of music from the 16th to the 21st century to all corners of Ely Cathedral for audiences of all ages to enjoy, from Handel and Mozart to Copland and Shostakovich.

Over an hour, you’ll hear a carefully sequenced series of shorter pieces from several performance spaces within the Cathedral. There will be choral and chamber music, solos, the cathedral organ, a 20-piece orchestra and the remarkable South African cellist/vocalist Abel Selaocoe. Each audience member’s experience of the event will be personal and influenced by where you sit. Not all performance areas will be visible to you: sometimes you won’t be able to work out where within the arches and chapels and galleries the music is echoing from.

Seating at this event will include chairs, but the majority of seating areas will be provided as mats for household groups on the floor – bring a cushion, blanket or even a folding chair and get comfortable to enjoy the music your way.

Abel Selaocoe +Chesaba at Wonderfeel (Netherlands)

The South African cello virtuoso Abel Selaocoe doesn’t back away from any repertoire: he has a great affinity with baroque, classical and contemporary music. But he most enjoys exploring the connections between jazz, improvised and non-Western music, for which he completely redefines his playing technique as well as his cello. Singing, humming, plucking, drumming and yes, even bowing, he conjures a soundscape that touches the listener in a magical way.
